Petaling Jaya, 16 December 2023 – The AGM began with a comprehensive presentation by Puan Anita Abu Bakar, President of MIASA, in which she outlined the important outcomes of MIASA’s Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held in October 2023.

One of the key decisions made at this meeting was the transition of MIASA from MIASA Selangor to the broader representation of MIASA Malaysia. This transition indicates MIASA’s commitment to expand its reach and impact nationwide. In this regard, to support a wider reach and to ensure continued funding, MIASA also announced the revision of its yearly membership fees, which is now RM70 for the general public and RM30 for the B40 group. The subscription for life members was set at RM1500 for members to qualify for discounts and informed early of selected programmes.

The AGM moved on to the second order of business where the board members were elected for the year 2023-2024 with additional board seats to enable representation from other states. This strategic move aimed to bolster MIASA’s leadership capabilities and performance nationwide. The members then decided to maintain the existing board due to their continuous contribution and impact on MIASA’s work and the community as a whole.

Looking ahead to 2024, Puan Anita also presented the roadmap for MIASA’s initiatives for 2024. This included the introduction of the MIASA Hope App, which will be a peer-based platform integrated with MIASA’s 24/7 crisis helpline and focus on inclusion of people with disabilities. It also highlighted plans to extend its reach to online audiences through the ‘Real Conversations with Anita’ podcast, support for seafarers’ mental health in partnership with ISWAN UK, participation in the Corporate Wellbeing Summit 2024 and the organization of the Stigma Conference 2024.

In addition, Puan Anita also highlighted MIASA’s involvement in various areas including Intentional Peer Support (IPS) training, producing an annual report to showcase MIASA’s impact and finances, and advocating for crisis homes to combat homelessness among individuals with mental health conditions in Malaysia.

As we set our sights on these initiatives, we deeply hope that these carefully planned projects can be carried out effectively, InshaaAllah. We hope MIASA is able to make a significant contribution to our mission of fostering a supportive environment for mental health. The collective efforts and commitment of our board members, our members, stakeholders and you will play a critical role in ensuring the success and impact of these endeavors. We also sincerely hope that this will have a positive impact on the lives of those we seek to support: our fellow peers and family.
