About MIASA Malaysia
Company Background
Mental Illness Awareness & Support Association (MIASA Malaysia), or Persatuan Kesedaran Dan Sokongan Penyakit Mental – is a Mental Health Advocacy and Peer Support NGO based in Selangor. It was founded in September 2017 and registered under ROS with the registration number PPM-027-10-14092017.

Our Pillars of Service Thrives on Peer Empowerment
Awareness
Target: Public, caregivers, and peers.
Scope: Educate on mental health and mental health disorders, the importance of mental health and its issues, including fighting stigma and discrimination.
Advocacy
Target: Mental healthcare professionals, government, policy makers, employers.
Scope: Advocate an understanding of patients and their rights by providing the patient's perspective.
Relief Support
Target: Diagnosed or undiagnosed peers.
Scope: Apply a bio-psycho-social-spiritual care model, supported by our network of professionals, peer patients, and volunteers.
Livelihood Support
Target: Diagnosed peers.
Scope: Provide trainings and workshops for peers to own their livelihoods thus contributing to society.
Objective
The objective of MIASA is to promote awareness on the importance of mental health, to address and clarify misconceptions on mental health issues and conditions while simultaneously provide support for peers and caregivers through its various programmes and support initiatives.
Being peer-initiated, MIASA has a strong foundation and also purpose. It offers a holistic solution, not only from the medical perspective but of spirituality being a key component, highlighting the critical importance of the recovery model focusing on empowerment, autonomy and right-based approach.
Recent statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed the following numbers:
- Over 720,000 people die by suicide each year.
- Suicide is the third leading cause of death for those aged 15-29.
- 73% of suicides happen in low- and middle-income countries.
- Many factors contribute to suicide: social, cultural, biological, and psychological.
- For every suicide, many more attempt it. A past attempt is an important risk factor.
