KUALA LUMPUR: A student committed suicide by jumping off a building in Seremban despite scoring 10As in SPM.
It is believed that Lin Jiaying, 20, could not deal with the stress and pressure from the need to excel in her studies and succumbed to depression.
According to China Press, she left behind a suicide note to her parents, before jumping to her death from the 14th floor of a building on Monday around 8.45pm.
In the note, Lin reportedly wrote that she was afraid of disappointing her parents and was under heavy pressure.
Lin added that she could not catch up on her studies, and wished that her parents could live a good life.
She also offered to donate her organs to others who might need it.
Lin was studying at a tertiary education institute in Kedah. However, she decided to transfer back to another institute in Seremban.
Her parents have been monitoring her movement by installing a GPS tracker on her phone.
On that fateful day, her parents called to check up on her after finding out that she was at an apartment building.
Lin picked up the phone, but she lied to them saying that she was with friends.
After some time, they could no longer contact her and started to worry.
Deputy Education Minister said Datuk Chong Sin Woon was at the scene to console the victim’s family.
He noted that there were 71 cases of suicide at the building whereby the victims jumped from the 14th floor.
Chong was quoted as saying that an electric door has been installed on the 14th floor but it was damaged by intruders.
Chong, the Seremban parliamentary candidate as named by MCA, said he would ask the relevant authorities to fix the electric door to prevent similar incident from happening.
At the same time, Chong said the victim was the youngest in the family with an elder brother.
He added that, according to her family, Lin would take medication on weekdays as she suffered from insomnia.
